AKG K340 v. HF-1 ?

Well, most of what I would say has already been said.

It is true that there are at least two versions of the K340. The two that I have had were rather similar, though my new set has a bit more bass than the old pair [perhaps due to the BlackGold cabling]. There seems to be a version that has less refinement, but with a warmer sound and more bass... aerius has this version. After mods both headphones are closer to eachother but the differences are still there.

The HF-1 is a great headphone, but very different from the K340. As was already mentioned, they do some rock [particularity male vocals and acoustic guitar] much better than the K340. With pretty much anything else I prefer the AKG's though as they just have more refinement, soundstage, detail, and instrument separation/imaging.

That said, the two headphones compliment eachother very well. If I am not in the mood for critical listening, I will sometimes throw on the HF-1's to get a bit more PRAT and just tap my feet to the music.

It's just a matter of opinion. I don't see guitars and male vocals as strong suit of HF1. *shrug*

Don't get me wrong, the K340's still do guitar wonderfully... I just like the less hi-fi HF-1's for many of these recordings as they tend to be a bit more grainy and less refined. Mids are the strong point of both of the headphones, the HF-1's just have a bit more bass impact and the K340's have the qualities that I already described above.

Lan - Are you going to be at the National Meet? I'd be interested in hearing what you think of my K340's.

Well then it could be said your like the HF1 more in a system synergy kind of way. A better source should relieve HF1 of all it's duties haha. Yes, one with greater bass and more refined that way you don't have to "dumb down" from the K340s.

Yes I am going to be at the national meet. I will be listening to everything I havn't heard. Beware I don't like 95% of things.

Funny thing but I don't even like my own stuff at meets as I've learned from the past.

So I don't even bother trying to get it going. So no worries there. Now if you really want my opinion I'll have to borrow the K340s.

Sure, no problem, you just need to lend me your HE60's.

I agree that it is hard to come to any firm conclusions at meets... at least the K340's isolate a bit, so they are a bit better off than most completely open headphones.

Cool... It should be interesting hearing some more K340's at the National. If I find one that I like better than my own it might get ugly though.

I listened to both of these cans at a meet and neither really did much for me. I played with the HHF-1s for quite a bit but only gave the 340s a quick spin. Definitely apples & oranges sound-wise. Mind you I prefer, and bought, SR325i instead of a HHF-1 after the meet. Wouldn't mind some QT with the 340s just to see what the deal is with them though.

You need the secret decoder ring and the secret K340 handshake first!
