I don't know if this is old news, but I've read today on a german forum that AKG will stop producing the K1000 at the end of 2005.
Jan Meier posted in that thread and confirmed it.
Even worse, there seem to be no plans for a K2000.
From 2006 on the K1000 will be a collectors item, get one now.

Maybe it's just me but if they are discontinuing the K1000s at the end of the year then why did they raise the price?

It's also good marketing. Send out word that a product will be discontiued so people will start panicking and try to buy one before they're all gone... then jack up the prices and most of these people will still buy. Look what happened to the iRiver H100s, they're worth more now then before they were discontinued.

Cr*^$ ! This means I have to think about buying a "spare" K1000 in case mine breaks down. It would certainly go the way of Grado HP1000 and become much more expensive to buy years down the line. I never regretted selling my HP1000, but my dear K1000

hmmm....

I could understand ceasing production on the current model, since the materials and technology exist to upgrade the drivers. However, ditching them without a replacement seems rediculous. I hope that Spike is right and they are working on a new flagship model.

I am still kicking myself for not buying a spare set when headroom had that incredible clearance sale. Maybe they knew something way back then.

You will still be able to order spare drivers. And in worst case scenario you can ask Headphile to install another driver in there.

im not surprised it's discontinued. the way it looks, i can't see it really having a very wide market. it appeals to a niche group within a niche group! maybe they've finally discovered a way to retain the quality of sound while giving it a better appearance.

im suprised that NOBODY makes a knock-off, or a "driver holder" for comonly available 3.5" automotive speakers.....

some even go down to 30hz

im sure that being as "under-driven" as a headphone is compared to the intended purpose of these small speakers you could get em lower with seperate high/low drivers....
