Well I've finally decided to order some brand new cans. After reading countles reviews I'm going for 701.

Theres just one thing I'd like to know. I'm using senn 595 which does everything I listen nicely. That's what I heard about 701 as well. So straight and honestly, how are they with rock

I am ordering mine Friday morning. Some here have stated the 701s do just fine with rock. I want to know how they do with fast paced metal or thrash. I will probably get the Sony SA5Ks for that genre but would love for the AKGs to do well for that type of music.

I know I fell in love with the K701 for jazz and I hear it is a top can for classical as well. Kind of happy I have other cans that can rock too.

It depends largely upon the type of rock you listen to. The 701's won't make you feel like you are in the same room as a Marshall Stack or anything like that. They will likely do quite nicely for more acoustic folk oriented rock, or prehaps prog rock.

They arent Grados but imho they have better mids for rock than the HD650 and the DT880 when i compared them. DT880's soundstage makes the mids a little too distant and polite for distorted guitars. K701 does it more in your face way. On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being grado i'd rate the dt880 4 and the K701 7 for rock.

ps. My collection is 50% rock and i'll sell my sr225 to buy an amp/dac for my k701

I feel the k701's are excellent for the acoustic and artier rock like prog rock.

I need to listen to more headbanger rock to form a more solid opinion but am just digging it with what I been hearing. But heard some Aerosmith the other night and it was quite good. I usually use SR225's for heavier rock.

I just got hung up on the the more artier rock listening to all the sounds and textures I had never heard before. Way cool

I'll get to the heavy rock eventually a bit more.

Yeah I need someone who listens to In Flames or Slayer to tell me how the K701s do with that sort of metal. May have to use my A900s for that stuff though.

Umm, at 30 hours, my K701 + Hornet combo doesn't outdo my unamped HF-1 in fun factor

I don't think my Grado are going anywhere even when the K701 are fully mature.

I love 95% of music through the K701s, and they have replaced my SR-125s, even for rock. The only songs I haven't particularly liked through them were usually bad recordings, the flaws of which are brought out by moderately accurate cans (they don't sound too hot through the Grados either). However, given the extremely forward presentation of Grados, I can still see why many would want those for rock. I, personally, however, like the K701 better.

I've found that the better the production and the more sophisticated the stereo separation, the better the 701s are - but I agree that they handle 90% (or more) of music very well.

I like the darkness of the DT880s for most metal; the K701s have a colorful sound, and they still sound great, but the Beyers are a natural, given my ears.

Agreed. Grados are a lot more forgiving of bad rock recordings, which there are many. I'd take the HD650 or k701 on a really complex, quality recording.

I prefer my Grados more than my K701 for rock music and I don't see any reason that going to change. As stated above, it is forgiving for bad recording. Saying that, Grados sound bit dry and uncomfortable for long listening.

They are ok for rock but there are many better cans for that purpose.
