Which is the better headphone between the AKG 553 Pro vs. Beyerdynamic DT 770 80 ohm? I like that they are both over the ear and offer great isolation. Looking to purchase one for road travel.

I think I would take the (Massdrop) AKG K553 Pro.

It seems that the massdrop deal is over. Why would you pick the k553 over the 770 80 ohm?

I'm not into bass like I use to be.
I own the K550 and DT770 80-Ohm.
The Dt770 is has a U shaped sound and loud bass
and I'm more into a balanced sound, which is what the K550 offers.
And from my understanding the K553 is an improvement over the K550.

The DT770 80-Ohm really needs to be used with a dedicated headphone amplifier, where as the K553 should work fine plugged into any smartphone.

I think I'll go with the K553. Thanks.

Let me express my opinion even though you've already made your decision.  I bought mine from Massdrop about 1.5 years ago.  I also have the terrific Philips Fidelio X2 open headphone.  Honestly, these are my go-to headphones.  I use these the most for their fantastic balance, privacy, and listening enjoyment.  The value is just off the charts and they really do get better with time--like fine wine.  Additionally, I just auditioned these against the new, fresh out of the box, Beyerdynamic DT-1770's with Tesla technology.  How did they fare against the more expensive and more capable Beyer's?  Actually, better than you'd think.  I was close!  Yes, the 553's were bested in smoothness, but not frequency range, or dynamics, or even clarity--just a whisper of "graininess" was evident by comparison.  The Beyer's will cost you an additional $500.  And the Beyer's don't fold up.   Enjoy!....but give them plenty of time to sweeten up.  Don't be in a hurry.  This is going to be a long-term relationship.

I actually regret buying the 553, sound wise they are not for me.

Thanks for replying with your opinion on the headphones. What don't you like about the 553's? I'm trying to make the same decision between these two sets since the jack on my M50's went bad, and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the extra money for the 770's, which might have a slightly better sound signature for me though aren't necessarily a higher quality set.

Those look really appealing, but the reviews commenting on build quality are scaring me off a bit. Have you tried them personally and had any problems with them?

I own the Soundmagic HP200.
For their given weight, not sure how they could have built them any stronger.
