Has anyone had a chance to hear the AKG-501's being driven by the SR-71? Also, any comments on the latest high gain/normal gain SR-71? Thanks.

yep! check out our impressions in the NYC meet thread. the K501 did very well with the high gain SR71 - the source was a modded 3950 as a transport and the overture as a DAC. personally i liked the normal gain with it too, but others felt the balance was wonky with it. I admit, with something like the K501, a high gain amp makes more sense.

edit - YIKES one just popped up for 350 shipped?

How do you tell if the SR-71 is 'high gain' or not? Is there a marking on the amp?

but i'm sure ray can up the gain on your amp if you send it to him, just give him a ring.

really speaking I don't know why high gain would be needed.
I ran the sr-71 out of DAC1's rca outs and didn't go past 12 o'clock for any music I own.

So try the sr-71 first as it is you might not need a gain change.

With the stock gain, the sr-71 is incredibly loud as is. I can't even use my nad c542/D211-> sr-71->ksc-35 combo. The volume is already too high before the channels balance out. (at ca. 9-10 o'clock) At 7-8 it's louder than comfortable. Even earbuds can't handle it.
