Ok could I use a Headroom Max as a preamp connected to an Acurus A80/100 amp to drive the AKG's? What kind of connection for the headphones would I need?

I believe the AKG K1000s plug into something that is hooked up directly to the speaker terminals on the power amp. At least I think so.

Yup, you're right. Also, I've used an RA-1 to provide volume control for a pair of ASL Wave amps. connected to my K1000, although I now use a Creek OBH-10 Remote Volume Control.

the reviewers seem to really like your amp. and at 80 watts it certainly has enough power, i just hope that it can supply the high current that the k1000's need. the k1000 needs 1000mw at 120 ohms. so your amp should drive it easily.

i'm bidding on a Crown d60a to drive my k1000's. i just hope that it sounds good with it. when it came to amp choices, it came down to a yamaha, a carver, or a crown (ebay doesn't have too many Marantz 1060B's or 1070's, and the idea of having to refurb a Fisher 400 doesn't turn me on). the d60s usually go for about $100, so that's what i bid. it's going to be a long time before i can afford an $800 headamp. i'd rather get the nOrh SE9 for $400, which i know makes the k1000 sound sweet.
