I contacted apple, and they told me that Airtunes could only be used from within iTunes.

I would buy this product if it could broadcast arbitrary audio output digitally from my computer to my stereo over 802.11. Right now I am using the U.S. Robotics 900 MHz analogue system, and needless to say the sound quality sucks.

Does anyone know of any hacks or third party software to do this with Airtunes?

Seems unlikely for now, since it seems to re-encode everything as Apple Lossless before it's sent off to the Airport. I haven't verified this.
