I just recently set up airtunes with Airort express and I have a hard time finding a DAC/AMP that has an optical input. I am wondering if I can use the USB part of the express to use as an output.

Thank you

No, it's only for a printer.

I do not believe that you can output digital audio on the airport's usb port.
There are a bunch of DACs that have optical input. I can say first hand that using the airport as a transport by connecting via TOSlink to a DAC works and sounds great.

Sadly not!
The USB out are for hooking up to printers only. The combined digital (optical)/analog out are the only option.

Lots of DAC's out there with optical input. Just look harder.

I just got a DAC and am using the optical input for my Airport Express. After a couple of signal dropouts, I wiggled the connection a tad and it sounds fantastic.

i have the same setup, but sometime there are some saturations.
I don't know why, but it's painfull.
So now i prefer use an direct usb connection and don't use wifi for serious listening sesion.

i'm not sure what you mean by saturations.
in my system, the wi-fi to AE to optical to DAC sounds pretty much exactly the same as the USB input. although I haven't done a critical comparison yet.

My english isn't enought great to explain correctely my wifi troubles.
Saturations are only on some frequencies (especially Piano Jazz) and are enoying when i listen music with my headphone (more sensitive than my speakers.
If someone have same troubles with AE and have find a solution..it'll be great.
I have made some test with different headphones, dac and records, and i can't obtain 100% great sound with the wifi.

Would you be kind to share brand names?

How about the Red Wine Audio Isabellina?
Stunning DAC, which accept TOSLINK (optical), USB and BNC input. Its portable as well, in the sense that its battery operated...

Highly recommended!
