It has been wonderful to see the tremendous aid effort for the tsunami victims, and I hope it continues through reconstruction. However, this does raise the larger issue of aid to those in disastrous need throughout the world and how we attain aid for all. The two examples that come immediately to mind are Darfur in the Sudan, and the situation in central Africa (Rwanda and the Congo).

These are not situations that arose through one devastating, catastrophic event, but are nonetheless as devastating and catastrophic as the deadly tsunami. In addition, these are situations that have been going on for some considerable time.

Obviously, aid in terms of money, goods and services is not always the solution. We can pester policymakers and educate ourselves about conditions, but since we are all seized by the moral imperative of aiding those in south-east asia. let us all perhaps dig a little deeper into our pockets and start to spread our generosity and aid wider afield so we can achieve a balanced aid for all.

Thanks to all of you who already so genenorously have given to aid those so devastated by the tsunami. May you sleep better for it. But when you wake, think how much is yet to be done.
