Just for the sake of posterity and future reference, I wanted to post this information, followed by a question:
I have a turntable, preamp, Stax SRM-313 amp and Stax Classic II cans which were humming. On 5 on the amp, the hum was pretty clearly audible. Long story short: I switched the polarity of the headphone amp's plug and *viola* hum gone (well, there's a slight remnant that you can only start to hear around 8.5 on the dial).
I had been, when I first got the amp using a DVD-A unit, playing with the plug looking for the "correct" polarity. Somehow the way it was sounded better on one occasion when I was straining to hear difference somehow and I ended up leaving it that way.
Anyhow, do you know what causes this sort of humming in this way?
Regards,
Matt
