Aful Performer Impressions Thread

Hmmm. I have a lot of thoughts, but I'm still not confident in how I have them fitting. So any impressions are colored by my lack of a good fit (to say nothing of my lack of earbud experience and lack of comparisons to other earbuds). Take this all with a huge grain of salt, and know that my opinion will almost certainly change with time and experience.

That said, I don't find the PolarNight at all dark. Warm? Yes. But dark? No. In fact, I was initially put off by how strident and forward the upper mids and lower treble were (with the stock donut foams). They initially sounded a lot like how @o0genesis0o 's graph looks, with that very steep and very tall pinna gain region. The exact opposite of "dark." I didn't like them at first.

I then tried them without any foams and found the overall balance much better, even if that almost entirely eliminated the bass response (no seal). Naked, the upper mid peak is subdued and the treble steps forward. But they lose their fit stability without foams. I've got silicone rings on the way so I can experiment more with a foam-less fit.

Then I went back to experimenting with the stock donuts. Now I've got them fitting securely and comfortably and sounding better than when I first tried them. The farther away they sit from my ear canal, the better they sound. Like with going foamless, that position tames the upper mids and brings up the treble (but not quite as much as going naked). The other advantage is that, unlike going foamless, I still get a decent bass response. Just means cranking up the volume a bit.

My current take is: they sound alright, but their big advantage over IEMs is their use case. They are perfect for walking. No occlusion effect, plus I gain situational awareness. But I'm going to keep experimenting with different foams, rings, and fits.

Ah .. strident upper mids? Hmm never liked the Simgot models for that energy in that region. Didn't expect Aful to do that in a Bud! But treble extension looks great..Let's see what tip rolling and silicone rings bring to the table.

EDIT: just saw couple of your posts on earbuds thread. Best to have it there. Shall join in if am in mood. Just one small thing: I do wear my buds around the ears like iems and it fits more or less snug. But yeah it will take time for the hyperactive brain to settle and resist the urge to keep repositioning. As different angles does affect bass , treble response etc.

"Hyperactive brain" is emblazoned in fancy gold script on my business card. It'd be on my license plate if it fit, and it'll likely end up somewhere on my tombstone.

It’s a bit surprising in the first hour or so since there is more ear gain than usual for an AFUL product, but I got used to it soon. After that, it’s just another AFUL-tuned midrange. Despite the ear gain, Johnny Cash and John Denver still sound as wonderful as expected. Meanwhile, Moondrop-style of tuning (and also Simgot) creates an odd, hollow sensation to both of these voices.

Still, buds are weird in terms of tuning and fitting. They are much more hit or miss than IEMs.

I seem to have gotten it nailed down. The combination of silicone rings and full foams (neither of which is included) were the magic bullet. The PolarNight sounds and fits fantastically now.

See! I told you @o0genesis0o! Full bass foams are the way to go with the Polar Night. Ooh, I got some silicone rings. I'll add them and see what happens? Thanks for the tip.

As I learned with IEMs, my ear holes are pretty big so I think I need the extra width of a ring. Made a massive difference for me. Toned down that pinna gain peak. Leveled out the bass. The added ring also has the effect of stretching out the foam material more, making it thinner and possibly allowing more top-end through. Full foams without rings sound way too bloaty to me, but with the ring, the full foams suddenly sound excellent. Could be the foams I'm using (just some generic randos from Amazon).

I'm still figuring out the issue of fit with earbuds. It's a completely different process vs IEMs.
