Aegis DIY Tube Headphone Amplifier

That's going to look great.

I actually like my current wood faceplate. I'm looking at a different design that wraps that front, side and part of the top.
You know, this is what's so great about the Aegis... we can all build an amp that perfectly matches what we want it to look like. For me, it's a testimony how good the Aegis is. I just want to build a chassis that leaves me thinking... job done, forever amp has landed :L3000:

Speaking of reference info, I found this very interesting/useful as I've been digging into Tung-Sol 6550s.

Love this video. Very informative and helpful categorization system. Based on this, I have the 2.2. And I love it…

I haven't made that comparison but....

Review and comparison of the KT88

Edit. I found the GEC KT88, as @AnyDave mentioned, has a big big stage with a beautiful airy treble that's smooth as you like. It has an almost spherical 3d feel to the imaging.

In this review he mentioned the RCA Black Plate 6L6GC and GE Gray Plate 6L6GC as potential alternatives, anyone have experience with either in the aegis? I found some GE 6L6GC for $30 each so I figured I would give them a shot.

Yeah, I ordered 2.2 as well.

He also did a nice video that included other types of 6550s and GEC KT88s. It's not as in depth, but it's a nice timeline of the various types.

You know, I have a true NOS pair of GE 6L6GCs that are as clean as any tube I've purchased, even new. I use them in my vintage Fender guitar amps, so I haven't tried it in my Aegis yet, but I've been meaning to.

Yeah, they are indeed very solid. Btw, please let us know how those PDFs work out. If they are good, I might buy a set as well.

He has the same Mac amps as me. The earliest GEC KT88 had a different glass shape and is very, very rare. It was only made for a year or so.

Well, I ended up snagging a pair of Tung-Sol v1.2 tubes. Black plates, with a single top D getter and two D getters on the same side of the tube. I wasn't really in the market, but these popped up and they are difficult to find at both a good price and in good condition, so I felt compelled to go with them. I haven't received them yet, so we'll see, but based on the pics, the getter flashing looks really strong.

Looking forward to your impressions, especially of v1.2 vs v2.2!

My money is on the v1.2, as earlier is often "better" with tubes.

That's often the case, so I wouldn't be surprised if that were true here. That said, these old ones are a lot more difficult to find/afford, so it wouldn't break my heart if the 2.2 were just as good.
