Do the 6SL7 have a big impact on the sound or, would it be a case of picking up a good pair of Brimar 6SL7 and focus on the output and rectifier tubes?

I have a bunch of 12AT7 tubes. Can they be used in 6SL7 sockets with this adapter:

in my limited experience with this amp, output tubes most impact (notable nuances), rectifier little impact (small nuances), input tubes no impact (only tried RCA 6SL7GT and Tung-GOL 6SU7GTY, but change I think was below my threshold of perception)

Good to know! Thanks 🙏

Yes, 12AT7 should work with that adapter. 12AX7 and 12AY7 too. I haven't tried them or tested them however so I can't tell you what the results will be like, but they should bias correctly. I would be most interested in hearing the 12AY7, it's the most linear of the three, still less linear than a 6SL7 but it does have about half of the plate resistance but only about 2/3 the gain.

I have a bunch of 12AT7 and 12AX7 tubes to test - I'll see if I can get an adapter and report (some of those take a couple weeks to ship from China; just got some 5687 to 6N6 adapters for another amp, was slow going)

I assume 12AU7 is too low gain? (I really have a lot of those if worked)

Sorry but too low gain and will not bias well in Aegis. But please report back on the others!

There are a few that won't bias well in the amp, like 6W6 and EL33

I'm curious about the EL33 not biasing well. Looking at the triode curves of the EL3N (same as EL33) with an anode voltage of 250V (would probably have to use a 5R4 or 5Y3) and the 350 ohms bias resistance, the operating point would be about -8.2V, 22mA. This almost matches the suggested triode-strapped operating point in the EL33 datasheet. Seems pretty good to me. Are there other factors that make this tube not bias well in this amp?

You're right, EL33 should be fine, must have made a mistake in my notes. That rules in equivalents like EL11 and EL3N (with adapter) as well. Sorry, it was a lot to keep track of putting all this stuff together.

It was a massive undertaking, and you did a ton of work on this... no need to apologize. It's always nice for folks to have even more tube rolling options!

This amplifier offers almost unlimited (output) tube rolling options. :)
Can 12e1 tubes be used with adapters? They are similar to KT88 according to ebay.

They look great…would be excellent if they did work!

I’m finding that I’m wishing away my life, that is, until the chassis and transformers arrive!

I'll take a look later this week, working the next two days. Others are welcome to chime in if there are triode curves available.

Soo many tubes to try! So little time.
What output tubes are those @Tom-s ?

Those are EL35's. penthodes The octal brother to the Philips EL5 tube. A great tube on its own and I had to try EL35 because it's one of the few compatible octals with mesh plate anodes.
Are they worth hunting, probably not. They got a smooth and open sound. I much prefer a solid plate EL34 or 6V6 most of the time. With tube rolling I honestly 100% recommend trying the 6V6 family first in Aegis. As those can be as good as you'll ever find.

Here's another tube I tried for the first time today! Pleasant surprise. Also rarely mentioned on head-fi.
Props for those who recognize them.
