My friend next door is an electric guitarist who is looking for a set of headphones for mixing. The headphones should be closed, since he will be listening with them while singing through a mike. His budget is $150-$200, and he is willing to buy used. Any suggestions? : )

i'm a recording musician and i've used the sr60 for almost four years. i don't see why they need to be closed since many singers take one phone off so they can hear themselves while they record. my sound guy always recommends the Equation Audio RP-21 to everyone, so i'll throw that one in but i think as a closed phone for simple bedroom recording by the non-audiophile hobbyist, the HD201 will do fine.

mastering, however, requires some serious gear.

Lots of good hps in that price range, but I'm with Magnum22...I'm a singer and I like to take one phone off when I sing too. Akg 240mkII is supposed to be very neutral/accurate for studio. It's semi-open. I use RP21's a lot, but IMO they are a little too bass heavy. Some other ones to look at are the ath m50 and the Fostex T50RP....also the new Shures... maybe the best of the lot.

1. K-701 used.
2. GMP 8,35 D Monitor.
3. K-240 MKll.
4. K-271.
5. M-50

As well I'll recommend the RS-1, but is not in your price range.

We use good quality headphones for mixing, but lesser quality headphones for mastering, going along with the "we have to get this thing to sound good on an ipod dock" theory. But I know that my Beyerdynamic DT990 pro are great for detail at the mixing stage.

I've only ever owned and heard the Sennheiser HD 25-1, which are closed I'm very happy with, seriously. The only other thing I can say is that the HD 280 and it are both closed Sennheisers and I would assume the price difference correlates to quality difference: HD 280 is $100 while the HD 25-1's are $200 at amazon.
