At the moment I currently use an ipod classic(7th) gen with a Just Audio 120 amp, very happy with the quality through either my Minerva Mi3 customs or the Sennheiser i8's.
Recently I've been looking at the wave of high quality dap's on the market and may buy one, not sure which one between the 601/2, hisoundaudio studio v(if I can find one in uk) or the ibasso dx100.
Anybody shed any light for me on how these players compare to ipod/amp setup?

The iBasso DX100 are supperior in term of soundquality compared to others two DAPs and it has large display, large capacity and Micro SD card option with good battery life.

+1 Way superior.
I owned the hm602 and was very unimpressed. My iphone 3gs + graham slee voyager was so much better. I sold the hm602 straight away. The DX100 is a very different beast, in some way polar opposites. Latest technology vs really old technology. ( ESS9018 vs TDA-1503) There should be a big increase in performance going from ipod/amp to DX100. There may or may not be an increase going to hm602/601 depending on your synergy/preferences.
