This might be a strange question and I may be sent flying out the door with a swift kick in the behind for my taste in music, but I'm hoping for an answer to this question. I recently picked up the soundtrack to Master and Commander, to try something new, and thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly the strictly orchestral pieces (Violin Concerto No. 3 'Straussburg' K.215, 3rd Movement and Boccherini La Musica Notturna Delle Strade Di Madrid No. 6, Op. 30 according to Amazon). Is there any CD or collection of CDs someone could recommend to me that is similar to the above?

Sorry if I worded something wrong, or if I'm just plain dumb

Thanks in advance for any input!

It seems you like symphonic music from late baroque, early classical. Boccherini, Carl-Philipp Emmanuel Bach and early Haydn (before Paris Symphonies) are good places to start.

I will try to recommend CDs I have and like, although you should probably explore a bit on your own too. Of Boccherini, you could try:

Of CPE Bach, I like Trevor Pinnock's Symphonies for Strings:

(Some find Pinnock stolid: in this 1980 recording, he is certainly not as elegant as the baroque masters of the 1990s; for baroquist interpretations, turn to the cello concertos by Bylsma and Leonhardt, for example).

Of Haydn, in that particular genre, you may like:

Enjoy.
