Hi

Just about to purchase either some sennheiser momentum or amperior. I've been reading on here about whether I need to buy a portable amp to go with these and have a few questions. I mainly listen to my music from my iPod touch or my HTC one x. From whatI have read if I do buy an amp it will only act as an amp not as a dac. My questions are

1. Is it worth buying an amp for portale devices?

2. If it is, is it just worth buying a fiio E11 or spending the extra cash and getting an E17 incase I ever do want to listen to music from my laptop etc.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

if you think the volume is ok, I think it is not necessary to buy an amp, otherwise you do. 
 
personally I don't think an amp "really" helps in improving the sound a lot.

For portability I wouldnt use amps!! It is meant to be 'portable'... Right? I don't think there would be any significant upgrades by using amp. Even the smallest amp is heavier than a mobile phone...unless you carry them with a bag ˊ_>ˋ

I disagree entirely with the two posts directly above.
 
There are some very small, "portable" amps that can make a large difference
in the SQ of your portable rig.
 
Depending on your source, the file types you use i.e. lossless or 'lossy',
the quality of headphones you use, the type of music you listen to. and
how carefully you listen.

E17 is a nice upgrade on a lot of computer headphone jacks.
Depends on how good your sound card is.
For a smartphone, again, depends on how good a DAC and amp your smartphone has.
