Depending on whether or not I sell my iPod this week, I may order one of the two above phones. I've been leaning toward the K701 because from what I've read in the forums, they have a marvelous soundstage (like the AD700). On the other hand, the AD900 is in the same price range (both are ~$250 on Amazon). It also seems to be a soundstage-healthy phone. I listen to a variety of music, but nothing that would require heavy bass. I'm actually quite happy with my HD555, but wonder what something wider would sound like.

Regarding the issue of amps, I have a UB802 mixer which I'd use. The chances of my investing in a new amp right now are zero.

If choosing between the two, which would you get? If you've listened to, owned, or sold/returned either, I'd also be interested in hearing your thoughts.

I voted for AD900 (see sig). Close to getting a pair, as I liked the AD700s. I have not heard the AKG 701, and there's nowhere to audition them here. I'm sure you'll be happy w/either. But you will need an amp to drive 701s properly. Good Luck.

If you are not going to amp, then there is no question.

Get the AD900's is you like open but also think about the A900's closed.

But the 701's really, really, really, really, really, need a good Amp. Now that's not to say it needs to be a super special high end dedicated Tube amp, but just something to give them some power. I use my Sony Home theater Tuner/Amp system to drive my High Impedence Beyers Dt990's and Sennheiser HD650's and they work well with the system provided you also come off of a good source.

No dedicated amp means that the 701s are a complete no-go.

I understand that but that amp is not going to be adequate for the K701s.

This. I would stick with the AD900 for now, but when you are ready to spend about $200-$300 minimum just for an amp, then go the K701 because it is currently my favorite headphone and will continue to be my favorite once I get my hands on a Heed.

not really sure why this got bumped, but it was good for a chuckle. Anybody else think to themselves "so this is where it all began"?
