I'm wondering: how much voltage does the meta42 need to operate well? I'm using 8610s and single 2001s(if that matters). Using 2 9 volts, I found that after 2 days of straight play, the voltage dropped to about 6-6.5 on each battery, giving about 12-13 volts. When the voltage dropped to this level, I felt that the bass response really dropped off. Can anyone else shed some light on this? Am I just halucinating?

I think it does matter. The el2001 loads the batteries and limits the reserve current available to drive the headphones. Which in turn limits dynamics.

In the case of my cha47/class A biased ad8620, with 2-9v batteries, it sounded a bit thin, but ok. With 4-9v batteries, it was more dynamic, and a fuller bottom end. It sounded best with a linear psu. Much more relaxed with the reg. psu.

When the voltage reaches down to 12-13v(6-6.5v), it's at the minimum voltage to operate the ad8610. I believe the min. recommended voltage by Analog Device for the ad8610 is 5v. Not a whole lot of room for transients.
