I have been looking as well and have kind of settled on the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 or AV 30.

AV40
AV30

Not the high end of audio but for a line out of a laptop perhaps a better option than the majority of computer speakers.

my bad, i should have been more specific. i actually meant speakers with amps behind the crossover, AV40/AV30 seem to have passive crossover too. i replaced them BX5a & BX8a Deluxe, although i'm not sure if they are meant for home.

There are also Swans D1010MK2 and D1080MK2.
Haven't heard them but I think they're interesting.
My choices are now:
Audioengine A5 vs. Swans D1080MK2
Audioengine A2 vs. Swans D1010MK2

Swans D1010/1080 seem to have a passive crossover. i added the Swans HiVi M200MKIII though, as well as Tannoy speakers. Tannoy maybe more studio oriented, same as M-Audio?

I think that as long as it is powered speakers they should be in the list, designed for studio or home doesn't mean that you cant use studio gear at your house or even the contrary !

But it is only my humble opinion.

powered speakers (passive crossover) to my knowledge are basically passive speakers with amp inside the cabinet. imo they shouldn't be called active, but it's just my opinion

i agree studio monitors can be used home, but i don't like they mostly omit analog rca inputs despite there are xlr->rca cables.

I got a pair of Swans T200Bs for $400 new and saw the deal one or two times since then. They are excellent speakers for the price and include both XLR and RCA connectors, plus a remote to control the volume so you don't have to fiddle with the volume knobs on the backs of the speakers.

Bumpity! Me three... In China, they're about half the price ($3xx on Newegg.com.cn) but we're not in China so that's moot. My parents are in HK and they've tried looking everywhere and no one can get them in stock, though I believe they're plentiful in China. It's $599 right now at Ozhometheater shipped.

If anyone sees them for $400 in North America, I am all ears!!
