I have a pretty cramped desk, but would like to pick up some speakers/monitors that can fit underneath my screens.  The total height available is about 6 inches.  Finding the actual dimensions has been pretty hard, as Amazon seems to generally list the size of the packaging rather than the product itself.

They would need to be active/powered and budget is ideally in the realm of $100--$400 for the pair.

I am well aware that small generally correlates with reduced bass, but I'm not interested in getting a sub.  I'll make sacrifices as necessary.

How about this Sharkk bluetooth speaker set: http://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Surround-Wireless-Subwoofer-Computers/dp/B00OUAIYRC/. I haven't tried them, but I have heard the original single version Sharkk, and it is good as the reviews say for the money: http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Bluetooth-Playtime-High-Def-Computers/dp/B00ES2BQ7M/ (notice the number of Amazon reviews).

Or check out the Kanto YU2GW: http://www.amazon.com/Kanto-YU2GB-Powered-Desktop-Speakers/dp/B00GMPDAAO/. Amazon seems to have the dimensions wrong, for Kanto says that they are 3.9” W x 5.3″ D x 5.9” H http://kantoliving.com/product/yu2/#specifications

An entirely different option if you can handle the width--and probably the best SQ option--is to go with two small passive center channel speakers, like these EMP Teks: http://emptek.com/e3c.php. You would need some kind of amp to run them; they are a little bit inefficient, so probably something more than a t-amp. A center channel speaker is just speaker designed for horizontal placement, so it might work very well for you.

Almost forgot about Orbs and Cambridge Minx Min 12 and Min 22:

Thanks for a really helpful replies!  I was a little hesitant to post this here since it's: 1) a recommendation request, albeit a very specific one, and 2) not about headphones, so I'm particularly grateful for the information.

My desktop doesn't have bluetooth support, so despite the pretty spectacular feedback I don't think that's a good option for me.  I'm leaning towards the Kanto, with Cambridge as a close second, mostly because they are very small, attractive, and powered.  A quick search led me to discover that the Kanto is also currently available for a little cheaper than Amazon via Massdrop.  The reviews are not as overwhelmingly positive, but I really just want something decent for the rare occasion I'm not using my headphones.

Much obliged.

Glad to help. Bluetooth is easy to add, btw, if for some reason you changed your mind: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007Q45EF4

Accessories4less has the Minx series available at good prices: http://www.accessories4less.com/index.php?page=seek&id%5Bm%5D=pattern&id%5Bq%5D=cambridge. I've heard really good things about the Minx for their size, although really would need a sub for any midbass (or sub bass).

The Kantos do look interesting, and I had forgotten about Massdrop. And if you ever decided you did want more bass, they do have a very small sub to pair with them: http://www.amazon.com/Kanto-SUB6GB-Powered-Subwoofer-Gloss/dp/B00JPJ20EQ/. There's a sub out on the back of the YU2s, so easy setup. Kanto lists the dimensions as 8.7” W x 8.7” D x 9.6 (Amazon is wrong yet again), so very tiny.
