I have every AC/DC album but in pretty dreadfull quality (128Kbs MP3) and would like to get some second hand CD's ripped to improve the quality somewhat. Are the remasters "safe"? or are they the usual compresed clippy crap?

The 2003 remasters are compressed to hell.

The 1994 Ted Jensen remasters are an OK compromise if you like a little compression and a more "modern" sound. If not, as always, have to go back to the original 1980s editions. Many of them sound great, mastered by Barry Diament.

Avoid the modern remasters, they are TERRIBLE.

Luckily on Amazon.com, there are mass quantities of older releases going for dirt cheap. I love this about Amazon, buy a new ugly sounding copy for $15, or buy an excellent late 80's or early 90's transfer for $2.

They're the worst I've heard.

When I looked at the graphs with Audacity I realized why they're unlistenable.
