Abyss JOAL Headphone- Jack of all Listening

Apr 22, 2025 at 6:56 PM Post #527 of 652
i am about 3 hours into listening on the RNHP and JOAL and im super surprised how well it drives them. But i can easily see myself getting a Schiit Vali 3 for this. I miss that little amplifier and this headphone seems like it would do really well with it
I have a Vali 3 and it has no right to sound as good as it does for so cheap. I run a GE 5670 tube and love the sound. I brought it to work a few weeks ago out of boredom with my current work amps (Violectric V226 and Ampsandsound Jinx), and it's been a blast. So much so I've not taken it back home. I'm not saying it's as good as those other two, but it's just as fun sounding. The other two easily outperform it from a technical perspective. But when you go simply on engagement, it's right up there. The Joal/Vali synergy is very good. The Vali with the GE tube is north of neutral, but not overly warm. There's a touch of added warmth and decay, so notes sound more dense and full. Highs are smooth and inoffensive. And the solid state power delivery really brings the bass and transient impact. It goes to show how strong diminishing returns are in this hobby. My work DAC is a Holo Cyan 2.

This is really nice to hear because ive gone far up the chain with Woo Audio amplifiers that ive now sold and i always thought "I miss my vali with E88CC Telefunken". Its just so good. I am definitely going to try the GE 5670. Pretty amazing how much power it has as well. I was using the LCD-X on it for a couple of years

I wish I had bought the JOAL instead of my Diana DZ. :triportsad: Everybody seems so happy with them. I am struggling to like the Dianas. :triportsad: Sorry to be a debby downer.
I get it, I had the V2 for a short while, these are a different animal honestly.

I’m interested to see reviewers put out some thoughts, all I’ve seen are brief first looks. I assume they’ll love them and be kind of amazed at their value proposition.

If you do end up with a set I’d be super curious how you like them against the DZ.

Why did you buy them if you weren’t happy with what you heard? In any case accept the fact you made a mistake, take the loss and get something you actually like.

Everyone here is saying JOAL is better than Diana DZ…. Isn’t it half of the price? doesn’t make sense

Greetings all JOAL fans.
Is this the designated tube you all are referring to?

JAN GE 5670W / 2C51W I’ve never dealt with tubes before but now very intrigued with the Vali 3. Will I need an adapter also? Specifically this:

5670 to 6922 Adapter.

Thx benjifx19 & erics75!

Looks like you will need that adapter. I ma a big fan of the Telefunken E88CC Black Diamond as well. That was my favorite tube for a long time. You can put you email on tube depot and they let you know when its in stock. Kind of funny you can such good sound from a $210 combo

If the h/p/a is Vali 3, NO ADAPTER IS NEEDED for a 5670 / 2C51 tube. To @benjifx19: take a look / scroll through "Schiit Vali 3: Impressions Thread" -- maybe you will join the "rave" 👍.

Joshua Valor describes why to pick the DZ vs the JOAL in his DZ review video:

I willl post here if I do.
If you dont mind sharing what the DZ was lacking because i was really curious about them.
They are bright. Too bright for me.

I did not audition them before buying. My bad.

 edit: that may have been my mistake as well.

Maybe. But the consensus is they (JOAL) are good.

Better is subjective for every person. I haven't heard the DZ so I'll keep things general. For me finding the right tonal balance is far more important than technical ability or build quality. I always preferred the HD650 to the HD800, even though the latter is many times the 650's price, and built much better. Plus this is the Joal thread, I'd expect to see more Joal lovers vs DZ lovers here. Go to the DZ thread and i'm sure they'd take the DZ over the Joal more often than not.
