Hey all,

New here, just trying to get some opinions and after searching I still have absolutely no idea.

Basically I want to get some comfortable headphones for my needs. I'm a medical student and I listen to lectures on podcast for many hours a day. I'm currently using JVC Marshmellow Modded IEMs (tend to irritate after a while) and some cheap $10 Senns HD201s that I picked up on sale. I study at home so portability is not a major need. Closed over-ear preferred due to sound isolation, but willing to entertain ideas. Budget <$150 if I can get away with it. I usually plug into my speaker's headphone jack (CA-3080, cheaper $30 desktop 2.1 speaker setup) but would also like to use with my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note II). Don't really care for an amp at this time.

Main uses:
1) Listening to recorded lectures - need to be able to hear the teacher speak clearly, especially when listening at 1.5x speed

2) Video games - don't play any type of FPS where I need precise positional sound (i don't play much but would like to enjoy when I do)

3) Music - Anything from classical to electro, I enjoy bass but I don't need to feel it in my bones.

Hit me. Thanks

Koss TBSE (aka DJ100) - I like them for music and casual gaming (like strategy games, where you're just listening to soundtrack and some effects - they do alright positionally, they're just fairly intimate). They have great, intimate, mids, that are fantastic with vocal driven music. I'm assuming they'd do very well with spoken word as well. Fairly comfortable too, which rounds out the entire package.

The other suggestion I'd make, which will cost more, are the Bose AE2. They have less intimate mids, but a better soundstage (better for games/movies), and are more comfortable and offer more isolation, which makes them great for all-day wear. I think they're a little much for just listening to spoken word though, but if you're gaming and watching movies and listening to music as well, they're also a good choice. I like both of these headphones.

Finally, if spoken word is the primary thing you're doing, raid the couch cushions and look at either the Koss KPH-7 or KTX-Pro. The KTX-Pro are considerably better sounding, but both are very light and comfy on-ear headphones that will do fine with spoken word and vocals (the KTX-Pro are actually good for listening to music too, the KPH-7 don't extend very much in either direction). Neither is perfect, but if you just need to listen to transcription and that sort of thing, I think $5-$15 is a better place to be looking than $50-$150. Just a thought.
