Mozilla! There's an option to uncheck: "Allow scripts to open unrequested popups" and you'll never see another popup ad.

I also second the Adaware recommendation. It finds all kinds of data miner cookies and search-term spyware.

Opera basicly is more heavy version of mozilla, opera opens sites usually litlebit faster and has some more features, but uses more resources. I personaly use Opera, just need to remember to restart it every day so it wont end up eating 1gb of ram after 1 week. You get used to the operas add pretty fast in about 1 month.

It's called Mozilla, my friend. Get it and never look back. Damn IE, damn it to hell.

You can block all popups and add exceptions to this so you'll still be able to browse www.headphone.com pefectly

I downloaded the Pest Patrol / Zone Alarm Pro.

ZAP does a good job of controlling crap coming in, but cuts the upload speed of my DSL in half when I use it.

Also, the latest update to ZAP has too many program starting checks (for accessing the net) now, and prevents me from using my online Mechwarrior game. So I uninstalled and went back to previous version.

I love ZAP features, but I am hesitant to recommend the new version. ZA support is no help.

Another die-hard fan of MOZILLA here! I remember once I had to do something in IE, and every single webpage I opened, five banners started popping up! (And no, it wasn't some **** site, it was spyware).

And for email, Spamex is the absolute best service.

I'll third the registered Opera; Ever since I've started using it, I haven't had a single popup, even with Kazaa installed, for IE, I used to use Pop Up Killer, but I think it's either been discontinued or declared open-source.

Besides moving away from windows entirely...(some popups are not through web browsing but actually interact with the built in explorer)...you can use Mozilla or Pheonix as described (gets rid of most popups and stops resizing).

Also...the ad-aware advice was stellar. I would also recommend xp-antispy for those who are not too clear on how to rig their box to be bullet proof.

The last thing is to use a basic firewall (the one included in XP is not horrible), this will cut many of the spam/popups that orginate outside of the WWW.

As for spam filters in email...Mozilla is great...I can't really comment too much on third party windows applications as I use linux applications for email.

Andrzej- Mozilla is an open-source project that is being developed independently from Netscape (though Netscape borrows heavily from Mozilla).
