So I've hacked a bit off some foamies so that the end of the foamie is just about flush with the tip of the transducer's tube. And if I get the insertion right, it does seem to fill out the sound some, particularly the lower mids. (If I get the insertion wrong, it quacks like a duck, but that was always true.)

But if this is a way of improving the Ety's sound, why don't Etymotic make the foamies this way? Have any Head-Fi'ers asked Etymotic what they think of adjusting the tips?

No, but I have wondered this myself. Why don't you send them an email and report back.

curious to hear the official response, but i'd almost 100% say it's because this will mean we'll have to change filters 20x as often since the tip of the transducer is almost exposed and closer to any debris / skin / wax / whatever. still, small price to pay.

i'm really starting to fall in love with my etys

I was going to try that on my next order. Do they fit the same, in other words, are they the same size?
