Trying to find out which ones to really go for, I do listen to high quality APE/Mp3s and watch movies and play the odd PC games also, any opinions are welcome cheers.

I have the DT770, but I prefer the A900. It's on par with the Beyer in respect of booom and soundscape, but has better bang and a much higher variety of usability.

Interesting to hear, was reading that pdf review and I get the impression he favours the A900s also.

Course doesnt help hearing about lack of mid-range, which apparantly both cans dont favour.

Mid recession of the Beyer is worse. Much worse.

The positive thing is that cans with recessed mids can handle badly encoded Mp3s or cheap gear much better than cans with "audiophile" mids.

From what you say, the ATH-900 is more versatile than the Beyer DT-770.
I listen to all types of music, including rock, but especially folk, ballads, piano, world music based on voice and chords.
So I should rather go for the ATH, isn't it?
Where is that pdf review you mentioned, RP2X?
Thanks,

Haha, so true.
Also, don't forget the Beyer's (according to most people) will be more comfortable.
Great for movies and games to boot.

That's what blinx is getting at, there is no such thing as a DarthTechnica.

Or AT's W1000, around 300 euros???
Probably excessive, pricewise...
Plus, only a 6.3 mm jack, not user friendly for Ipod and laptop.
I'd be curious to know what folks think about them, though.

I have both and like the 770's more. The A900's are more comfortable, and sound slighty better in a few tracks, however the dt770's do alot better in games, movies (especially in action movies), and most of my music I listen to (mostly hip-hop/rap/R&B), but I say try out both yourself, one thing I've noticed during my short time on this board is that you gotta listen for yourself. Theres been a few times so far where I've heard the complete oppisite of what someone else has.

Anybody try to drive the DT770 with portable MP3?

I did a listen today to the semi open backed DT 880 and fully open DT990.

The 990 had great soundstage highs and good bass, the 880 was brighter and lacking in bass extension, I would never now consider the 880

Neither cans blocked external noise getting in and in both cases my ZVM had to be run flat out to get anywhere near enough volume.

How do these compare with the 770. I need a closed back can that will be driven by a portable as well as my home rig or am I going to need a PA2V2

Thanks!
I'd like to try them both. But I can't (practically): I have to import both.
Once I buy one, I will probably just keep it!
Funny you say the ATH are more comfortable, I would have thought the contrary, some people seem not to like the leather-like material of the ATH.
In fact, I am hesitating between these two and the Beyer DT-880, ie a top audiophile (semi-open) vs probably-more-to-the-point-in-my-situation closed headphones...
