Im going to be running a x-fi music. I know the a900 are better then the 500's but is it really worth the extra 100$? I dont plan on running a amp at this time.
Any input?

Audio Technica happen to be very good at keeping a consistant house sound between models in any given line, so what you'll get is "like A900, but somewhat worse" with the A500. They're not going to be bad, no, but you'll eventually want to upgrade if you like how they sound.

If you already know you like how they sound, just go with the A900 now and save yourself some cash in the long run; if you don't know, then it's more vague.

A900 are really nice and if you have the money I go for it. A900 may actually need an amp less. Being the impedence in 40. Not sure what the A500 impendence.

A500's impedance is 64 ohms (A900 and A900LTD are both 40 ohms), and has less sensitivity or 100 dB than A900's 101 dB/mW and A000LTD's 103 dB/mW.

However, that's only how they differs on paper. No indication of how differently they would sound.

Lol, the wait will be worth it. I'm glad I went the somewhat unconventional route of Audio Technicas.

64Ω and 40Ω impedance is perfectly okay for closed headphones and >100dB sensitivity is fine too.

My A900s run so easily out of my AAA-powered iAudio 5.

the a700 is like 10 bucks more

which makes the gap between the a900 even smaller

I went the A700 route to cut costs. A lot of people said that from model to model Audio Technicas sound similar, just get more refined as you go higher. So I figured I'd save a few bucks and get the A700 to test out the AT sound. From the looks of it, I'll probably end up getting some W5000s in the future.

Glad you find your true calling. Sorry about the O/T but W5000 is more open sounding than the A900 (which I used to own). You might find them quite different sounding to the A700 you own.
