I was at my bud's house and mentioned that I'm taking a soldering and desoldering class, and his dad fetched me a nice gift:

that is one great gift! I have used one of those professionally for over thirteen years in my job as amintenance supervisor of container cranes...when i retired, I took it with me. They sell for around $100...

I use it to hot cut kite fabric, weld plastic, monogram plastic cases of radios, etc., besides soldering with it...it is really handy - at highest setting, it is like a a120-150 watt iron, and on lowest setting, it is like a 10-15 watt iron.

I wouldn't be without one of these.

Does it solder with a flame?

No, the butane is used to heat the tip.
