I am in the market for a good headset for dubstep, edm, dnb, sometimes I may listen to rock, and may use them for gaming. Not sure if an amp would be needed or not? Will be using for my ipod.


 


I was told the AKG K550 would be a good choice for me. Now here is the thing, I found out best buy sells them and because I am an employee I can get them brand new for $150. So If I could find something that retails for $400-500 that would be a step up from the AKG K550 that would be great. Would like one that doesn't need an amp but could buy one if needed.

I would say for those genres, and given there aren't many options in that price range at Best Buy, I would go for the 550's, of course AKG are about to replace them, so you could also consider the new model.

The denon ah d600 wouldn't fit my needs?

The new Denons get mixed reviews, generally not as we'll liked as the old Denon D2000 or the 550s. I suggest you read all the reviews and threads you can find on them.

If you're a bass head the D600s will give you more impact than the 550s. Personally I think the 550s are a bit bass light but I'm a bit of a bass head myself.

For closed cans, the AKG K550 are very good all rounders. It kind of depends on your demands. For closed headphones hyou could try:
 
- Ultrasone PRO 900. Thay have way bigger and stronger bass than the K550. You lose on soundstage and detail though. Also...not for sale at Best Buy.
- Denon AH-D600. Also a bit bigger on bass. Great soundstage and detail. For sale at Best Buy. Very very ugly IMHO.
 
If you are not a basshead per sé, the AKG K550 for $150 are the deal of a lifetime. You'll be very happy with them and you kan spend the rest of the money on something else If you do love a lot of bass, look into the options above.
 
If you are also considering open cans then there are a lot of additional options.
 
Edit: regarding the K550. I do not find them bass light. With a little amping and with a track that calls for it, you'll get plenty of impact with a proper fit (which I am luckily able to get easily with these). Also, the bass goes very deep. So all in all it has very good bass, but in moderate quantities (there is no bass added like it is on for example Ultrasones).

I dont know if you want lots of bass as much electronica imo has some nice mids etc. the Sennheiser Momentum is slightly on the bassy side and requires no amp. That could be an option. Other Ideas are: ATH-ESW9A and ATH-W1000x. All headphones will benefit from an amp. If you are using a ipod you could bet a fiio e11 and lod which would work well as a portable amp.

Note about the Akg k550's:
 
You MUST have a good seal to get the full sound out of those cans. If you wear glasses and don't usually wear contacts, they will sound weak and bass weak due to the lacking seal.
Also, I would reccommed you to try them out before you buy them if possible. If you have a small head, you might face another problem since they don't clamp strongly. They are made to fit as comfortable as possible with no pressure point.
 
Apart from that, they are just great. Makes me smile every time i put them on

I agree about the need for a good seal. I get a perfect seal though, whilst wearing my (normal size) glasses... So it's really hit or miss; if you wear glasses you are not lost, but if you don't you're not automatically golden.

Any day now for the k551's, they have iDevice controls so that could be a positive or negative for you.

I'm pretty sure I had a good seal as I have a large noggin, seemed bass light to me out of an iPhone, I would like to hear them amped to compare.
