This has been bugging me in the back of my mind since I heard about it.

Why would the manufacturer put a different and better ADC on the rear channels than on the front?

Whoops... I meant DAC.. getting my digitals and analogs mixed up..

Apparently the rear channel DAC is a Wolfson 24 bit 192 khz unit..

Yeah, same thing counts for my old Live!5.1, and also the Audigy 1 had better rear channel components then the front channel.

The KX Drivers "solved" the problem with those by switching the channels.

Just to make you wonder.

Here's my guess.

Via bought ICensemble(Envy chip manufacturer) arround 1999~2000. Then they developed VIA 6 channel codec(which is used in AV710) later. VIA was not very behind in terms of chipset development back then. AV-710 came out in the market arround 2002, I think.
So this somewhat suggests, chaintech did not have whole lot of choices for 7.1 channel codec back then when the card was developed. Is that why they put 6 channel plus 2 channel to make 7.1 channel card? 7.1 thingy could be huge marketing concept when all others are 5.1 or less. I guess they want it to be 7.1 anyway even if 7.1 dac is not readily available.

Thanks, that makes a good deal of sense. I wasn't aware of the history of the company.

I guess since they already had the production line set up it was cheaper to go ahead and continue producing the card as is rather than redesigning with a 7.1 DAC.
