We should compile a list of sites that offer free music to download -- ideally, music that's difficult to find in other forms.

I'll start things off by listing two of my favorites:

1. http://www.notype.com/

(Home of an mp3 label that offers downloads of many glitchy Canadian electronic music artists -- now affiliated with academic composer Francis Dhomont's excellent site for Canadian electronic music, electrocd.com.)

2. http://www.fallt.com/catalog/index.html

(See the invalidObject Series: originally a set of twenty-four 3" CDs, each consisting of fifteen songs, all one minute in length, by artists including Taylor Deupree, Ekkehard Ehlers, Electric Company, Akira Rabelais, Goem, Scanner, Warmdesk and Junior Varsity. Release date: 2000. Until very recently, every single track in this series was available to download (which I did whilst slavering and jostling my privates uncontrollably). Now only the Pita CD is available (but you should still download it, as it was a limited pressing, like all the rest).)

I've approx. three cds full of mp3s downloaded from http://www.epitonic.com .. vast majority are top quality (music-wise) as well, for some reason they tend to avoid crap artists

The above appears to be a commercial mp3 download site featuring, for the most part, standard and ubiquitous artists. Am I missing something?

A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away there was a website that had a big index of artists who published under the OpenMusic licencse, but it seems to have disappeared.

This one, perhaps? (Specifically, here.)
