Is it the case that if an MP3player has no line-out jack it cannot be amped or, is the headphone jack used instead?

Is a line-out jack preferrable?

Thanks,

Players without a line out can still be amped but some purists feel that it's still not a pure and sometimes might have a noisy signal. Usually when using a player without a line out dock , i set the player volume to max and control the volume via the amp.
