A crazy thought: do flat, monitor style transducers tend to produce "unpleasant", harsh effect while listening to typical music?

In other words, is soft, ear pleasing sound an effect of rolled off low and high frequencies matching the hearing FR and eliminating some of the source imperfections in low and high frequencies such as harmonics, clipping, distortion, mike pop, and such?

Rationale: most pop music is mixed for audience that uses commercial grade equipment and uses high compression.
