I don't think it's just newbies recommending the ATH-M50's:

Who cares if somebody hates them? That's their prerogative. It may be a silly notion, but whatever...some people can't make it through a day without getting their panties in a bunch over something. I chalk it up to a lack of attention as a child hehe

+1. In addition to those "expert" reviews and recommendations, there are the hundreds (thousands?) of owners in this and other forums who have expressed their happiness with the M50. I'm not saying it is a perfect HP, just a very good value for the price.

New on the forums! Anyway, just be happy that Audio Technica has sucked up hundreds, if not thousands, of customers from Beats by Dre. These headphones look good in my eyes for a first purchase, so yes, I will be following the hype-train. I would get the Fisher Audio but it looks like it doesn't give me portability, and plus I'm not a big fan on how it looks. I hate judging by looks but - in my age - if you wanna go to the level of walking out with mammoth cans, then doing with style is the way to go! Plus, I like the sound of that bass for my dubstep, hip hop and anything else I feel like throwing at it, whilst keeping the rest of the frequency nice. I been following this thread for bout 20 pages now and I can see loads of people like different headphones, and just wanna say that we all have different tastes, or different ears for that matter, and bashing on each other because of is entertaining to watch, but not the best way to spend time. On topic, I have also been following these headphones for months and they just don't ever seem to die out, or there's something better waiting out there.

To sum up what I said, for people who hate reading paragraphs of babbling.
-M50s take Beats sales = YAY
-M50s look good for my teenage...age
-M50s are here to stay...IMO

I disagree with all points.  The M50 is one of the best closed headphones on the market IMO.  We have objective CSD measurements that show it measuring better than the Denon D7000.

The M50 is well balanced in tone and frequency response, it is fairly fast, has little resonance artifacts, has excellent deep bass response and good treble extension.  It's not perfect, it has a bit of bass and treble emphasis, but it's minor and pales compared to the hugely flawed response many other headphones present.

The "M50 backlash" is just as silly as the M50 hype.  Except the M50 hype is actually more accurate.

Well said. I wonder how many of the naysayers were once yaysayers?

How did these get so over-hyped? I don't even own a pair of headphones, so I am a complete noob, yet I know how over-hyped they are.

Just because a product is very popular and or successful doesn't mean it's 'over-hyped'.
Often it just means the product is really good, which I think is the situation with the M50's.
Very good headphones; exceptional value.

What do you mean by "over-hyped"?

We try and find reasons to hate something that we think people like too much

Pretty much.  It was cool to spruik the hell otuta them, now the bandwagon's turned around.

Can't wait for the comeback where they become underappreciated classics :p

No, you know how overhyped a lot of people say they are.  Just like half the people who recommend them have never heard the damn things.  They just know how great they are... because everybody says so.

You see how all this starts, now?

Here's why the M50s are still #1 in their price range for closed cans:
  • They sound good. Maybe not the best in their class, but they certainly trade blows.
  • They *feel* good. Quality of the synthetics, quality of the build, quality of the cables. They're worlds above one of the previous $100 recommendations (Senn HD280 Pro), and they feel a lot nicer than some more expensive cans.
  • They work with a wide range of genres. They're not as genre-agnostic as some other cans, but for closed cans they are pretty decent.
  • They're widely available

These things just make them easy to recommend, and easy to buy, and easy to live with. I haven't really found the need to purchase a higher end closed can than the M50s since buying them a couple of years ago - anything more and I go for open cans; the M50 has ticked my closed can box and currently has it in a strangle-hold.
