I have on the search for a new pair of headphones intensely, i have read many things and have com to the conclusion that the two (a-900's and the grado 225's) are in close competition, so i would like to hear opinions about quality of build between the two, bass, and which one is going to be better with and without an amp. I mainly listen to rock, some jazz, and some rap.

Build quality: A900
With amp: SR225
Without amp: Really depends

Rock: SR225
Jazz: Depends on type
Rap: SR225

Soundstage: A900
Comfort: A900
Vocals: SR225
Bass: Haven't tested
Detail: SR225

I believe the A900 is one of the best all-purpose phones. I use it as work daily. Sounds great straight from a portable, etc. Good for film watching and reportedly gaming. If isolation wasn't an issue and I could have only one for music listening though it would be the SR225.

I use to own both these cans and agree with most of the above. But would go with the A900s for rap. I also think the A900s have more bass (but not as refined or controlled as the SR225) because it overpowers at times. And as for details I think it’s a toss-up.

Electric guitars sound nearly as good as I've heard on the SR225 whereas the A900s don't really deliver.
