8501 is a lower grade chip.
It has an integrated line driver capable of sustaining lower impedance loads. So it's more of an all-in-wonder chip, but still quite good.
SNR for 8501 is rated at 100db, while WM8740 is 120db.

AMB Gamma-1 uses WM8501 or WM8759 for DAC chips.

PS: And no, WM8740 is not the best. WM8741 and WM8742 are now top dogs at Wolfson.
