It could be that the simple increase in impedance is helping the damping factor.
Most cables as long as they are well terminated and made should sound very similar. Perhaps you assumed that the stock JH13 cable should sound better, but in actuality the JH13 is more about the driver layout and implementation than the cable.

I believe the FiiO is causing some impedance mismatch.
