$500 giant killer speaker system

Heard the VR1 powered by $5K worth of front end equipment including a DK Hybrid Amplifier.

Sounds pretty good and has quick bass as well.

If I may make a recommendation for the speakers:

I just recently got my Klipsch B3's which I'll be taking to college with me. Simply put, they kick ass. Now that I own them, I can actually be another one of the people who can tell you... these do not need a subwoofer. Seriously, that's how good the bass is. It has to be heard to be believed. But that's not it, the detail is superb also, and for the first time, I've listened to some clarinet music on a piece of audio equipment and felt the timbre to be accurate. These are great, period, so be sure to check them out.

My brother has the B2 and I'm familiar with the Klipsch sound as well as the B3. Having heard the VR1, the VR1 takes the cake. IMO.

Well, I'm not surprised, considering they retail for $1000 (although they can be had for way way less obviously). The Klipsch retail for $330, which is more around the amount the thread originator was looking to spend. I think for the price, I got every penny in terms of the sound these things are putting out. In fact, they just went on sale at Best Buy recently, but I'm not about to shlep all the way to the Best Buy I got these from 45 minutes away to get the difference because of the time, and because I really think I got my money's worth. I've never really heard any speaker this size before sound this good, and I bet these VR-1's would impress me even more, so I'll have to see about hearing those sometime.

The B2's by the way aren't as impressive as the B3's for obvious reasons (Smaller horn, smaller woofer: less detail/imaging, shallower bass), but I'm sure you know the B3's can hold their own in the bass department.

Hi Chesebert,

I actually have the same setup as you. ce595 -> NAD320bee -> Dali Suite 2.8. The Dali is awesome but i think it's out of your budget. Why not try a used Magnepan MMG on audiogon since you like something more laid back.

Edited: Opps...i didn't read that you already bought a pair. Congratulations!

ce595 redbook performance is kinda bad. so I am using my Eastsound at the moment

resorting to ce595 for only SACD materials

You could look at a pair of active Audioengine monitors($350). I have heard great things and have a black pair on order. If they sound as good as the reviews, you could sell your NAD amp or move it to a second system. Another option would be some DIY from www.diycable.com. I am currently building a pair of Exodus 2641 towers for a friend and can say that the driver quality is fantastic and I cannot wait to hear them! They cost me $900 total and that is just drivers and crossover bits not marketing, legal, pocket filling markup! I started this prodject based on a friends DIY that uses the Extremis 6.8 midbass drivers and loved the bass! The 6.5" driver's patented technology give the small driver the same air movement of most 10" drivers. They do sell smaller kits. I like my friends DIY bookshelves so much that I am building the tower kit for another friend and my design is under way. Just need the cash for mine because I am looking at $2000 worth of drivers and Xovers.

The Audioengine actives should be here this week and I can tell you about them then.

I know you had your NAD for quite a while now. Does the amp sound edgy to you? I had a hard time listening to them because my ear would get tired out really fast. I think its a combination of distortion and other unwanted harmonics.

And so I am driving vr-1 with T-amp...LMAO...a solid class B setup IMO, with respect to my class A headphone rig.

I think my issue with NAD is why does it not sound better than T-amp since its more $.

Yes I did! I was not suggesting that $1000 is within the bugdet, nor that the only option is the active monitors! Here is the link for the pair that I was suggesting at $490.

http://www.diycable.com/main/product...b05ea4af37db07

So does that mean I did not read the thread, or can you read my post and see that I am saying the the driver component are top notch, enough so that myself and three other friends are building with these drivers because they sound that good for the money. Think outside the box!

"Two roads diverge in a yellow wood..." get it!

It doesn't sound edgy with the Dali. It did sound really bright with the B&W 602. Sadly, i think i'm going to let my Dali go. I've never heard the T-amp though. I really like the NAD. It makes me feel at ease because i think they're musical, value for money and reliable.
