Sizing up the logistics and practicality of this.
I have a Benchmark DAC1, and love the transparency. Seeing as I've been managing to find them for ~$500 a pop, getting two more for a 5.1 setup doesn't sound unreasonable.

Couple problems though:
1) I can't seem to find any PCI/e card that'd let me output 5.1 via 3x any of the connections in the title.
In reality, I'd probably have a better hope of finding a component that'd split the audio from a HDMI cable (as my GPU can WASAPI/ASIO via HDMI) into 3x Optical/SPDIF.
I 'think' lynx cards can output multichannel via AES/EBU, but they cost a mint. I'm still trawling through cards though. Maybe an Maudio card could do this?

2) I'd still need a way to attenuate the volume quickly.
Suppose I could use the digital volume control from within programs or some outboard digital pre. But that'd be at the lament of purists that come around and adding MORE hardware would be annoying.

3) Minimal compared to the other two, but bass management could be an issue.

Any ideas?
