I have the Audioengine 5's with an Acculine Asub for the low end. I tried Blue Sky's at a local guitar center early on and they were no better than the z5500s, which can probably be had for close to 200 nowadays if you look hard enough. There is a clarity that you get with quality bookshelves that you just won't get with little satellites. However, if price is really a factor and you must have 5.1, the z5500 is probably the best bargain there.

the audioengine's are active, i.e. self-powered no receiver needed, which I bought for less than 300 shipped

If you want value the z-5500 is about 255 shipped on amazon.com (I saw 215 on slickdeals a few days ago but I couldn't find it).

Sometimes I wished I just bought the 5500, since when you get bookshelves and a sub, you'll eventually upgrade those to more expensive bookshelves and the list goes on...but this is head-fi after all lol
