Hello everyone,

I've been sticking to IEMs lately, such as the Sony MDR-XB90EX and JVC FXT90s. Those were both really great values for the money. Unfortunately, a dog destroyed the Sonys and the JVCs gave out. I would just buy another FXT90 but I want to experience something that accommodates my tastes a bit better. But, I want CANS!

I've been looking at the following:

Sennheiser M2 for $300
Yamaha HPH-MT220 for $200
Sony MDR-100AAP for $200
Sony MDR1A for $300
OPPO PM3 for $400
NAD VISO HP50 for $250
Focal Spirit Classic for $400

I like a warm sound, decent amount of bass/subbass. I listen mostly to R&B, Vocals/Acoustic, and Rap.

Considering the price, what are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Hd650 is open back, with very little isolation. And for them to shine you would need to spend something starting from the $200 range.
Another one to considerato if you are OK with open back is the Fidelio x2, wich is way easier to drive (micca origen or fiio e10k is fine)
Another interesting one is the zmf classic which is semi closed, but there are 0 reviews so far. Hard-ish to drive

Don't let the thread names scare you:

Your XB90EX are near the top of the IEM list :) Personally I have the Aurisonics ASG-2.5 for IEMs and Fostex TH-600 and TH-X00 for full-size.

Thanks for the responses everyone. After some more consideration, I think I am going to go for a closed pair of cans. I updated the main post.

Focal Spirit Classic should be on your list.

HD 650 being dark is a myth.

At least post 2013 HD 650s are very close to neutral. The treble is a touch less than neutral, and the bass a touch more. So a warm neutral. But closer to neutral than most including DT 880 and HD 800.

Yeah, I would agree based on what I read. If I was going for open ones I think I'd have gotten these.

So after a lot of research, the Yamahas were the winner. Quite a few stories portrayed the cans as something that I'd enjoy, particularly with certain equipment such as a Felix Espressivo amp and a flat DAC like the Modi 2 Uber. Plus, I was able to get them brand new for $200.

Thanks again for everyone's input.
