$400-500 Speakers w/o sub?

Looking to get some new desktop speakers, but i doubt i'm gonna get a subwoofer (more money thing than anything), and probably not another dac either. The airmotiv 5 and the vanatoo transparent 1's have been looking good, but i don't know much about them other than their glowing reviews.
 
Really new to speakers, btw.
