I am looking to build my first home setup and I am going to start with the transport. I dont want to spend more than $300 and I was thinking maybe the MARANTZ CD5001 would be a good choice. Any thoughts?

I had pretty much decided on getting that until I realized that the CD6002 will be coming out very soon. The CD6002 is going to be considerably more expensive ($550 list vs. $330), though still probably a relatively good deal.

Hmmm,
Very interesting!
Wonder if the CD6002 will be as good as, or better than the SA8001 on regular redbook cd?

I have no idea. It's supposedly getting lots of trickle-down from SA-15S1.

Here's the Japanese press release.

With CD players in that price range, features and ease of use are much more important than sound quality. Most CD players use the same stock parts put together in pretty much the same way. The differences lie in the way the controls are laid out and features. Marantz makes good equipment. So does Dennon. Shop around and try the players out and see how easy they are to use.

See ya

The Marantz is a good choice, another alternative that you might want to look at though is the Cambridge 540c, which you could probably find in your price range. Another option is the NAD C542, which is another pretty good player.
