Eagle Drive: I wish I would have seen that NOT list so I wouldn't have gotten these MDR-300's a while back. I wish there was a total list for all the poor headphones made out there so we wouldn't have to waste time and money.
Akathriel...you still did a great job with the pictures.....

There are two different "MDR-300" headphones from Sony.

Did you mean the MDR-V300's? Or did you really mean the MDR-XD300's?

Eagle-Driver: sorry that's with the V. I brought it to the meet and wouldn't you know the little plastic chip that keeps the earpiece from flipping out snaped off. How's that for timing? And yes I was also disappointed with that sound; although Steve999 had a nice Sony, but I forgot which one. What do you recommend for under $100 (or close above or below that?) thanks in advance

That was the Sony MDR-V6, aka Sony MDR-7506, (They're the same, but the 7506 is the pro model.)

You can get a 7506 for about $100 or a little less at any Guitar Center, or from many places on the net.

Some people swear by it, lots of audio pros love it, some people think it's the last word in accuracy, and some people think it is mediocre and has significantly too much treble. I can see merit in either side of the argument.

Me personally, I love my V6. It's truly one of the all-time classic headphones.

It's NOT NOT NOT the Sony MDR-V600 by the way. It's the V6, NOT the V600. The V600 is awful.

steve999: thanks Steve, they seemed very good to me; and thanks for your help during the meet. I meant to ask you what was your opinion with the sound from the ipod you had hooked up with the K's?

You're welcome! I thought the ipod and the K701 were an excellent sounding combo.

here are my opinions on the grados that were at the meet: the speakers are so close to your ears, they are forward, and the pads arent big enough and they arent comfortable

the top 2 things i look for in a headphone are
1. comfort
2. sound

i guess im a senn guy
