Here's my speaker history over the last few years:

- Logitech X-230
- Logitech X-540
- Bose Companion 3
- Logitech Z-5500

Just sold the 5500's today, as they were taking up too much space on my desk. Looking for a 2 piece speaker set. Hoping not to go the Logitech route, as I feel they are too bass empowering. The Bose Companion 3's were surprisingly good, but after realizing that Bose headphones were absolute ****, I'd like to try out some other brands.

Please recommend some good speakers to me in the $200 to $300 range, or please advise me on whether re-buying the Bsoe Companion 3's are a good idea.

Edit: Oh yes, I'm also considering the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1. At $150 they don't seem bad at all. Recommendations?

My boss in the small company I worked for last year had bose companion 3's set up in her office. The biggest impression I got from them was along the line of "why is the subwoofer doing that? that is not what the music is doing...." Also, I think the highs were kinda out of whack, but that could also just be the fact that it was so in that sample setup they had in costco that cost a good bit more than the companions... So yeah, I would advice M-Audios over em. One thing is though if you want lower frequencies from them you'll need a subwoofer, but that's pretty much always true.

Very good call. 100% agree.

How do the AV40's compare to say the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 or the Swans M10?

I own the promedia's and was considering the M-Audio AV40's as an upgrade... saw the swans mentioned elsewhere online and the price seems pretty compelling....

I can get the AV40's for $230cdn($200US) after tax, while the A2's would be roughly $40 more. Not really sure if the $40 are worth it. My main source would be a MacBook Pro hooked up to a Total Bithead Amp. Does that sound good? Flac>MacBook>Total BitHead>Av40 and then maybe to HD595's.

AV40 is probably better. A2 are so damn small.

Woah, thanks for the link! I was looking at Tigerdirect for $203+ tax. Sweet! I'll be heading out there tomorrow to pick them up.

At $260+tax, do you recommend the M-Audio BX5A instead?

Edit: NVM. Thought you were referring to the amp.

Meh. Just stick with the AV40 for now. Even though the M-Audio might be an upgrade, it won't be a particularly big jump. Save up for a sweet pair at closer to $500-$1k.
