Source: Zune and looking at buying a Zero DAC/Amp (or something else if you recommend) playing high quality VBR mp3 or FLAC.

Music: Progressive rock/metal, post-rock, ambient, trip-hop, trance, acoustic etc. been exploring a lot of new genres lately so list should expand

Either open or closed will work.

I haven't ruled out another Grado but I was hoping to maybe get something of higher quality/more modern design and really comfortable

(and maybe get some variety).

if you like the ms-1s and are willing to try other cans in the grado family you could check out the sr225s or the alessandro ms2s. if you'd like to get away from grados check out audio-technica a900s (or one it's variants).

The Grado 325i's will fit that bill. I have the MS-1's and know what I'm drooling for. MS-2'a are fine but a little too laidback.

why not look at modding your ms1? or, if you are looking for something with a "modern" design and higher "quality" (i'm assuming you mean a more detailed and accurate reproduction of sound), try looking at the AD900 or 700. alternatively you might be able to afford a sennheiser, which others can advise you on.

The Audio Technica AD900 if you want to get open headphones. The Beyerdynamic DT250 or Audio Technica A900 if you want to get a closed headphone. Any of these will cover most genres well enough.

There is an AD900 in the for sale section.

But if you want a brand new headphone, you will have to look at AD700. AD900s are beyond your 220-250$ budget.

A used DT880 is what I replaced my MS-1 with. Might want to consider that as well.
Have you checked out the Audi-GD Compass DAC/amp?

I have looked at the Compass and I may actually go with it although not sure if I want to pay the extra $100.

Also I was wondering what people thought of the K601s. They look like they'd suit me pretty well.

I don't think I'll get Beyerdynamics though, I don't know but they just don't feel right. Considering the 325i and AD900 though.
