Looking at anything from the AKG K701/K702, Senn HD650 (if I can find one at that price), Beyerdynamic DT-880 (250 ohms) and the HD600. Any ideas? I ask because my Denon D2000 just broke and I'm confused as to what to buy. I'm looking for something that would sound different from the D2000, a pair of phones that's more open and airy. I prefer listening to electronic music (Aphex Twin, Brian Eno ambient music), rock (Radiohead, R.E.M., The Pixies, Cocteau Twins, etc.) and occasionally jazz. Using the E7/E9 to power whatever I end up purchasing.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

K701 sounds like the complete opposite of the D2000.  If you want something in between the two I would go with a HD600 or HD650, plus the Senns will have that open airy sound.  I had the D2000 first then went to the K701, I recently bought a pair of HD650's and I think my headphone search is over!  I'm loving the sound from these new 650's.  The E7/E9 sounds amazing with these, very liquid sounding.  Flip the gain switch and you shouldn't need to go over 10 O'clock on the dial for any material.
I will probably end up selling the D2000 and K701 soon.

I had the D2000s and had to return them; I could not stand the recessed mids.  After that, I got the AKG K702 and I have to say that it's the best I've heard thus far in terms of separation, soundstage, and clarity.  The frequency response is very neutral and I don't find their bass to be lacking at all; just tighter without as much reverberation as some other headphones.

Another option is the Beyerdynamic DT880 250 ohm.  It's on sale at Amazon for just $224.96 atm.  It's also known for a relatively neutral and detailed sound, with good soundstage.  Comparing them to the K702s, however, it's clear that the separation and clarity of the K702s is a notch above.  Perhaps things will even out some once the DT880s break in a little more.
