Eddie at DiyKits is now selling this $20 "DAC in the Box", which he says sounds similar to Zhaolu. One can operate it with an outboard 12V SLA battery.

It appears to use good-quality parts, such as CS8416 receiver chip, CS4397 DAC chip. The super-short signal path and battery power should make it interesting. Any Zhaolu owners wanna give it shot?

For twenty bucks ? How far wrong could one go ? I may have to consider this just for the sake of practice with modding. It would be a hell of a fun project to mod this thing and if I destroy it , well it's not a great loss. Nice find.

Speedpost rate to America for 0.25 kg is 123 Hong Kong dollars.

Seems to be a different rate for shipping to N.Y. (go figure) 123 HKD coverts to 16 USD. Thats with speedpost though , takes about 2 days to N.Y. as I remember.

Damn , this is tempting ya know ? Well since I will be doing surgery on my D 2.0C in about an hour (bridging DC blocking caps , perhaps remove the LED console also) I think I will hold off for now. Have you done this yet Device Manager ?

EDIT is my math off ? The list is for 450 HKD = 20 USD for the DAC itself. What exchange rate are they useing to get that number.

Is it me or is the currency conversion wrong on the DIYKITS page http://www.diykits.com.hk/dac.html? Using a online currency converter 450 HKD equals 58 USD.

Must be a typo the rest of the conversion prices are right for the other products , maybe it actually costs 58 USD. That would seem a little more inline for a DAC no ? 20 does seem wildly low to me anyway. Hmm....

how exactly would one find the correct price? Email them? And is purchasing just done by sending them money through paypal with a note for what its for?
