I have a project I'm working on that requires very thin cables for routing and weight constraints.  So far I haven't been able to source IEC power cables thinner than 18AWG 

 
 
Not that it matters but this isn't audio related.  Also, the devices I'm powering are ~50W max so I'm pretty sure 20AWG should be fine for that kind of power.

I have a feeling there is a reason 18awg wire is the smallest you'll find on appliance cord.

Remember that you are protecting your cord with a 15 or 20 Amp circuit breaker.  Although some Christmas lights seem to get away with this (but most are fused).

That could work if you have a cord with an appropriate fuse say 1.25A250V in the male plug.
